BIOMARES, the AUGent platform for biorefinery of marine resources and marine bioactives, organizes its first platform network event. During this event AUGent researchers will present inspiring examples of the different phases of marine biorefining, such as bioprospecting, the use of biotechnology, primary biomass production, conversion technologies and diverse application market segments. The presentations will be followed by parallel interactive sessions to dive deeper into these themes. In these sessions, you will be able to define research needs starting from your own expertise and experience, and suggest pathways to make marine biorefining a success story within the AUGent.

The Interregional Internationalisation Initiative University Network (3i Network), founded by Ghent University, KU Leuven, University of Kent and University of Lille, invites you to its first forum.This forums aims to connect universities, regions and the private sector to tackle shared challenges common to Flanders, Kent County and the Hauts-de-France.

To assess the potential of oceans, seas and estuaries in reducing the causes and consequences of climate change, globally and locally, EMBRC Belgium and Instituut voor Landbouw, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek (ILVO) are organising a Symposium on Marine Carbon Sequestration on 16 December 2021.

Ghent University Global Campus holds the 2021 International Symposium for the Korean Peninsula Marine Global Project on November 26.

The symposium will offer insightful ideas and discussions toward sustainable development by integrating blue bioeconomy and blue carbon. It features a series of presentations and discussions from 10 countries. The first session is dedicated to the exploration of blue bioeconomy potentials in the tidal flats and their utilizations, such as food, pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and renewable energy. Session 2 addresses blue carbon in tidal mudflats and examines viable options for achieving carbon neutrality.

Sustainable use of ocean resources, referred to as Blue Economy, has to deal with several societal challenges, such as food security, human health and climate change. Coastal areas worldwide are among the most densely populated, but most vulnerable to the impacts of human- and climate-induced changes. Innovative multidisciplinary solutions are required to mitigate these urgent social challenges while simultaneously providing crucial ecosystem services that (in)directly affect people (e.g. storing carbon, controlling floods, stabilising shorelines, provision of clean air and water, food, fuel, medicines).
